Plaza Ruana
Overview:
Plaza Ruana is a concept store located at Quito International Airport, created as a tribute to Ecuador’s traditional markets, handmade toys, and the warm, colorful spirit of childhood in the Andes. The store presents a nostalgic and joyful experience, where each product tells a story of heritage, memory, and craftsmanship.
Concept & Objective:
Inspired by the vibrant energy of local plazas and street markets, the goal of this project was to celebrate Ecuadorian identity through an immersive retail space. Plaza Ruana honors the culture of play, color, and community—offering travelers a curated selection of handmade items that reflect the creativity and skill of artisans from the Sierra region of Ecuador.
My Role:
- Conceptualized the store’s visual and spatial identity
- Designed the layout to evoke the feel of an open-air market
- Curated product displays and zones based on artisan techniques and traditional themes
- Integrated colors, textures, and props that reference Ecuadorian childhood and cultural memory
- Ensured storytelling through visual merchandising and signage to connect emotionally with travelers
Design Approach:
- Celebrated playful, handcrafted items that evoke nostalgia and cultural pride
- Used natural materials and locally inspired decor to reinforce authenticity
- Created a warm, dynamic environment where tradition meets modern retail
- Highlighted the work of Sierra-region artisans, giving visibility to their skills and preserving cultural roots
